There is a woman... no ordinary woman. Her name is Mary Card.
She was born in Australia in 1861, at a time when crochet was considered mere "housewife work" tucked away in drawers, seen by no one outside the family. But Mary had a different vision.
She loved drawing and brilliantly began integrating her illustrations into crochet patterns. She could design a pattern showing a sleeping woman among flowers, or a bird flying over a lake—all crafted with just a thread and needle.
In the midst of her growing ambitions, she completely lost her hearing.
Anyone else might have collapsed. But Mary declared:
"I may not hear the world, but the needle and thread will finish the story."
She decided to be fully self-reliant. She designed her first crochet pattern book and distributed it herself from her home. The surprise? The book sold like wildfire, reaching Britain, America, and royal households.
Mary Card transformed crochet into an art form, opening doors of creative opportunity and income for women at a time when opportunities were scarce. To this day, we still use some of her patterns in our work.
When you hold your needle and work, remember that women like Mary Card paved the way for us—stitching history with just a thread and needle.
